WHY MOZAMBIQUE?

Bob and Flavia had a long term goal of helping in Africa.  Since both are fluent in Portuguese a quick review of the countries brought Mozambique to the top of the list. The country's 23 million people are listed as among the five poorest in the world. Mozambique has a very high rate of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and suffered a nasty civil war which devastated the already poor infra structure and killed more than a million people.

On the positive side, given the conditions, the people are happy and friendly.  The country is now peaceful, has a mostly market economy and significant natural resources.  In particular the young population with high birth, maternal mortality and neonatal mortality rates got Flavia's attention while the extensive tracts of unused arable land piqued Bob's interest.

When it appeared that the last of their 4 daughters would graduate from college in 2012, they set their start date for January 2013, put their house up for sale and flew off to Africa.

Flavia  was awarded a Fulbright grant and is now teaching medical students at The Universidade Catolica de Mozambique.  Bob is working on a incipient agricultural project and investigating medical missions alternatives.
They live in Beira, the country's second largest city with about 500,000 inhabitants. They would be glad to provide details about what they see and do to anyone interested.
